James M. Dorton

July 13, 1934 ~ December 9, 2020 (age 86)

James M. Dorton July 13, 1934 – December 9, 2020 Jim was born at home in Akron, Ohio in 1934, the youngest child of Jesse and Cora Dorton. After graduating from Kenmore High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving his country from 1953 to 1957. He was stationed for a time in North Africa. He worked in sales for various companies then for Goodyear in Akron, Ohio for 15 years. He retired to part-time employment and enjoyed perfecting his golf game. He was a member of Jackson Friends Church and the Generations Sunday School Class. He was a loving individual, a gentleman, and he never knew a stranger. Jim was known for his quick wit and his unceasing sense of humor that could not be defeated by his failing health. He loved bestowing the gift of laughter and we all loved to laugh with him. He was full of funny stories, jokes, and familiar quips, which we fondly refer to as "Jim-isms." It was important to Jim that others know that he was lost, but then was found by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who has welcomed him home. Jim was predeceased by his parents, his former wife Gloria (Morris Dorton) Glenny, son John Dorton, sister Genova "Jo" Burdette and brothers Robert McNeil, Eugene McNeil, and Clarence "Mac" McNeil. Jim was also preceded in death by his lifelong best friend and "blood brother" Eugene Cross. Jim leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years Helen Jeanette (Schlaker); his dearly loved sister Jean Brown; his children Jack (Marcia) Dorton, Diane Dorton, Lisa (Mark) Graziani, and Jerry (Alison) Dorton; his grandchildren Gayle Thatcher, Alex Graziani, Jalen Dorton, Emily Dorton, Faith Dorton, Amanda Dorton, and Jonas Dorton; his great-grandchildren Isaac Dorton, Ember Hilliard, and Judah Hilliard; his very special sister-in-law Paulette Coleman; her daughter Vicki (Steve) Bosz and other cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and treasured friends. Jim's family would like to thank all of the courageous medical and healthcare workers throughout his life, especially Dr. Tracy Kotnik whom he adored, and his dear VA practitioner Dr. Jeanette Porubovich with the Akron VA Clinic. Additionally, we are unendingly appreciative of Administrator Teresa Morris and her entire devoted staff at Pleasant Pointe Assisted Living for going above and beyond the call of duty on his behalf. Finally, our heartfelt thanks go to the dedicated angels of Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care for their tender ministrations, with special thanks to Terry McWilliams. The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later time. Should loved ones desire, memorial donations may be made to Jackson Friends Church, 7945 Portage Street NW, Massillon, OH 44646.
