Susan Anne Grossman Hirt (Sue Hirt), 75, of Akron, OH, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2025, in Cleveland, OH.
Sue was born in Pittsburgh, PA to William Grossman and Helen Grossman (Crispens) on August 17, 1949. She graduated from North Allegheny High School in 1967, then Enrolled in the Nursing Program at Alderson Broaddus College, graduating in 1971 with a BSN. She later earned her MBA from the University of Akron.
Sue was a nurse for 43 years, starting at Geauga Community Hospital, later working at various hospitals around NE Ohio, mostly at City Hospital in Akron in ICU and Labor and Delivery. She also worked at Planned Parenthood in Akron for many years, retiring in 2015 after attaining the position of Director of Risk and Quality Management for Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio.
Sue was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron since 1980, and, along with her husband Rick, was very active in the Youth Programs of the church and the denomination regionally, guiding and supporting hundreds of youth over the years. She held many offices in the church leadership, including board member. Her focus at the church overall was social justice, however she could help it along. Sue was also a very active in the Humane Society of Greater Akron, serving as a volunteer at Happy Tails, the thrift shop for the Humane Society, even after she became ill. Sue loved gardening, and was honored with an Akron Beautification Award in 2016 and 2022.
Sue is survived by her husband of 54 years, Rick, daughter Jennifer, both of Akron, son Erick, of Cleveland Heights, OH, sisters Cheri Love (Greg) and Michelle Love (Jeff), each of Portersville, PA, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sweet dog Lucy and cat Max. She is preceded in death by her dear son Zack, her parents, Bill and Helen, her brother Bill, and all her aunts and uncles.
Funeral service will be Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Hummel Funeral Home at 3475 Copley Road, Copley, OH, with Rev. Elaine Strawn of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wayne County, Wooster, OH officiating. Visitation hours will be Friday July 18 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and Saturday July 19 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with service immediately following.
Memorial donations may be made to Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio. The family also encourages people to give blood as often as possible, to replenish this valuable and important resource, which helped prolong her life.
