How do you describe a warrior who lived just short of 102 years? Most of them with a smile on her face? She was a feminist before it was fashionable, kind to the bone, resilient beyond measure, adventurous and lived and died on her own terms.
Polly was born in 1922 to Frank Clifford and Ruth Thompson Perkins. She had 2 brothers, Dick and Don. She studied economics at Stephens College in Missouri, served in the US Coast Guard in WW2 before marrying her first husband Glenn Porter, the father of her 3 children. She managed a busy doctors' office for 35 years, and one of those doctors, Chuck Zegiob, became her second husband after they each lost their respective spouses. More than anything, she loved her family fiercely and they loved her just as much.
She was an avid and skilled sailor and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, slot machines, fencing, horseback riding, aerobics, and dancing. She also loved her birthdays! They were always large gatherings of family with lots of food, laughter and celebration.
She leaves her family a legacy of unconditional love, the belief that they can be and do anything they set their minds to, a balanced view of living in the moment and planning for the future, a sense of adventure, and understanding that the world is big and wonderful and needs to be experienced.
She is survived by her 3 children - Richard Porter (Barb2), Barbara Melbourne (Bill), and Becky Porter (Shaun Sjostrom) 4 grandchildren Janet Garman (Mike), Wayne Porter (Robin), Bonnie Gorzelle (Gregg), and Ben Melbourne (Sunghee); 4 great grandchildren Sydney, Kylie, Dakota and Olivia, several step grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by the kind and compassionate caregivers at Laurel Lake Crown Center where she resided the last 6 years of her life.
Private services will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Polly's memory to Laurel Lake Foundation, 200 Laurel Lake Drive, Hudson, OH 44236.
