Mary Brumter

SISTER MARY PETER BRUMTER, OP Sister Mary Peter Brumter died on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014 at the age of 88 at Our Lady of the Elms Wellness Center, Akron, OH. Sister Peter was the middle child of Urban and Mary Mickley Brumter's seven children. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, now Dominican Sisters of Peace, from St. Mary Church, Wooster, Ohio on September 8, 1943 and made religious profession on August 26, 1945. Sister Peter graduated from Our Lady of the Elms High School in 1944. She received her BSE from St. John College, Cleveland, OH in 1955 and her MSE from the University of Akron in 1968. Her career in teaching primary grades began at St. Joseph, Alliance; then at St. Dominic, Youngstown; Immaculate Conception, Ravenna; St. Paul and St. Vincent both in Akron; Crown Point Preschool, Bath; and St. Agnes, Orrville where she taught and was principal. From 1975-99 Sister Peter devoted her energy as religious education coordinator at St. Victor Parish, Richfield, OH. Since 2000, Sister Peter has been a pastoral care volunteer at Regina Health Center. During this time, she also served as co-moderator of the Friends of the Elms. No matter whether she was teaching, walking, attending her flowers, travelling, visiting friends or doing craft projects, she attacked each with much joy and zest. Sister Peter is survived by sister, Rita De Pasqua of Wooster and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Edward and Bernard, and sisters, Agnes Orr, Frances Brumter and John and Elizabeth Konkler. Visitation will take place at Our Lady of the Elms Convent, 1230 W. Market St., Akron on Wednesday, October 8 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. with a Wake Service at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday October 9 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
