Marilyn Ann Loeffler, 83, of Akron, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at The Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn.
She was born April 30, 1942, in Sandusky, Ohio to Irene and Lawrence Smith. She graduated from Sandusky St. Mary High School in 1960 and from Notre Dame College in Cleveland in 1964 with a Bachelor's of Science in biology.
Marilyn's professional calling was teaching high school math. Despite math being an unpopular subject for many high schoolers, Marilyn worked hard to make it understandable, and maybe even a little enjoyable for her students. Her teaching career included Copley High School in the 1960s and Our Lady of the Elms High School from 1985-2002, where she was the head of the math department for many years. She retired from the Elms when her husband Ron retired from Goodyear, because it was understood that she wasn't going to keep working if he wasn't.
Marilyn's hobbies over the years included golf, bridge, sewing and crafting. Friends were likely to find a golf tee, sewing needle or glitter in any car or around the house.
She was a past president of the Christ Child Society of Akron and remained active in the organization for more than 50 years. She took great joy in working with a group that helped local children, and also in displaying her artistic side for its annual fall boutique.
She was, at various times, a member of a local Red Hat Society, Merriman Hills Garden Club, several golf leagues, and the parishes of Saint Vincent and Saint Hillary.
Marilyn was kind and tough; outspoken and generous. You always knew where you stood with her, and, honestly, she was usually right.
She was a strong and supportive role model for her daughter and granddaughters and one of their biggest cheerleaders. She was a true friend to so many in the area.
Marilyn was predeceased in 2010 by her high school sweetheart, Ronald Loeffler, who she married Aug. 21, 1965. In their 44 years of marriage, Ron and Marilyn were an active and social couple whose combined personality was even more than the sum of their already impressive parts.
She is survived by her daughter Lisa Loeffler Maddux and son-in-law Jason Maddux, of Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania; two granddaughters, Veronica of Boiling Springs and Olivia of Helsinki, Finland; her sister, Kathleeen (Joseph) Sanderson of Monroe, Mich.; niece Jennifer (Michael) Fish of Fairfax, Virginia and nephew Joel (Rachel) Sanderson of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She is further survived by other family members and many, many friends.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to Christ Child Society of Akron, P.O. Box 5855, Akron, Ohio 44372.
