L.A. “Tony” Waickman, MD

L.A. “Tony” Waickman, MD died on Nov. 2, 2023 at home surrounded by love.

Tony was the oldest of seven siblings born to Frank and Marie Waickman.

After finishing college at Holy Cross and medical school at the University of Rochester, he completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa. He then did medical volunteer work in the mountains of Nepal and in Thailand. The high point of his time in Thailand was marrying Lynn while they were working at the same refugee camp.

Tony and Lynn moved to the Saranac Lake area in 1985 and Tony was a partner in Medical Associates of Saranac Lake until they closed in 2018. He worked until his retirement in 2020 with Adirondack Health. He was instrumental in bringing nuclear cardiology, veneers duplex imaging and doppler echo cardiography to the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

Tony loved to be on the steep portion of the learning curve, with interests in medicine, meteorology, stream biology, astronomy, rock and ice climbing, trail running, and singing, in a sense anything exploring this wonderful world of ours. However, his greatest joy was being with his family, watching them grow and flourish, and coming to know them as adults. Thank you, Lynn!

Tony was a long-time parishioner of St. Bernard’s parish, where he sang in the choir, and helped rekindle an interest in our patron Saint, St. Bernard of Montjoux.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, one daughter, two grandsons, two sisters, two brothers, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A private service and burial will take place at the family’s convenience.
