Karen L. Downing

Karen Lee Downing (nee McConnell), 79, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 13, 2026 in Fairlawn, Ohio.

Born in Hagerstown, MD, on December 26, 1946, Karen graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1964. She then moved to Ohio where she attended Wittenberg University and earned a degree in education in 1968. Karen was an enthusiastic cheerleader and a beloved member of the Delta Gamma sorority, where she made many friends, some of whom she remained close to until her passing. It was also at Wittenberg University where she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Richard Downing. The two were married on December 17, 1966 and were blessed with three children and thirteen grandchildren.

Karen gave her time and talents generously as a member of the Akron Junior League. She also loved to dance, evidenced by her time spent as a jazzercise instructor. No matter the mood or the music, you could find her lighting up a room with her dance moves. Karen also loved music, and you could frequently find her humming along to her favorite tunes. An avid traveler, Karen especially loved trips to the British Virgin Islands and had the opportunity to visit numerous times with her husband and her family. Karen was a jokester, keeping those around her constantly laughing and on their toes. She was also kind to all living creatures, big and small.

Karen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. One of her favorite things to do was to host and cook family dinners. Above all, her greatest love was her family. Karen was generous, selfless, loving, gentle, funny, and witty. She brought immense joy into everyone's life she came into. We will miss her kind heart, generous spirit, and infectious smile every day. Her passing creates a hole that will be impossible to fill but her joyful spirit will be carried on in those she loved and who loved her.

Karen's family would like to thank everyone at Vitalia Senior Living and Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center for their loving care of her.

Proceeded in death by her father Jim McConnell and her mother Patty (Palmer) McConnell.

Survived by her husband of 59 years, William R. Downing; brothers Jim McConnell and Michael McConnell; sons Brad (Amanda) Downing and Todd (Katie) Downing; daughter Amy (Drew) Dawson; and thirteen grandchildren including Braden, Ava, and Oliver (Downing); Greer, Quinn, Reese, Lola, Roan (Downing), Bailey, and Presley (Baker); and Jordan, Sydney, and Jack (Dawson).

To honor Karen's wishes, there will not be a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor can be made to the Humane Society of Summit County.
