Joseph Paul Szoke

Joseph Paul Szoke, 91 years old, of Copley, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Joe was born June 14, 1934, in Akron, Ohio to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Szoke.

Joe grew up in the Ellet area of Akron and graduated from Ellet High in 1952. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and subsequently graduated from Akron University. After working for several companies, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to a successful career as a franchisee, beginning with Taco Bell and later with Shoney's and Subway. He retired in 2020 after decades of dedication to his restaurants and employees. He was a loved husband, father, grandfather and a true gentleman. Joe enjoyed the finer things in life: fine dining, fine wine and fine cars; however, he never sought attention - but has left his mark on those who knew him. He was happiest when family and friends were gathered in his home, and the wine was flowing.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Frances (Lipovac) Szoke, daughter Patrica (Szoke) Williams, son-in-law Eric Williams, their children Nicholas Williams and Julia (Williams) Johnson, her husband Douglas Johnson II and great grandchild Sloan. Additionally, he is survived by his son Joseph C. Szoke, daughter-in-law Jennifer (Anderson) Szoke and their children Joseph R. and Jonathan M. Szoke.

Calling hours are Friday, February 27, 2026, 4:00-7:00pm at Hummel Funeral Home, 3475 Copley Rd, Copley, OH 44321; Celebration of Life Mass is Saturday, February 28, 2026, 10:00am at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 1676 Cleveland-Massillon Rd, Copley, OH 44321. Interment to follow at Copley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Joe to Walsh Jesuit High School, 4550 Wyoga Lake Rd, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44224.

Special thanks to the nurses, aides and staff of The Sanctuary of Wadsworth for the excellent care given to Joe during his last few months.
