Gilbert (Gil) Shepherd, 66, peacefully concluded his courageous 25-year cancer journey on December 12, 2025, at home, surrounded by family and is remembered resting in the light of God's love, grace, and mercy.
Born on April 24, 1959, Gil spent most of his life in the Copley area and was deeply dedicated to his roles as husband, father, Papa, son, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, friend, student, athlete, coach, volunteer, and successful small business owner. Above all, he cherished being a family man, nurturing and guiding his loved ones with unwavering support.
Gil approached each day with gratitude and optimism, teaching patience and perseverance. He encouraged others to live each moment in faith and hope and was known for his gift of gab-delighting in connecting with people and inspiring those he met with uplifting stories, a warm smile, or acts of kindness and motivation. His passion for sports was evident, especially in his devotion to Ohio teams-even the Cleveland Browns- until the very end. Family gatherings often included his favorite tradition of sharing spirited conversations and gentle humor, which will be fondly remembered.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Jr. and Lavonne, and his beloved border collies, Sandy and Gracie.
Gil's legacy of love continues with his devoted wife of 42 years, Catherine; five wonderful sons, Joshua, Jeremiah, Justin (Madeline), Jonathan, and Jordan (Caterina); and three adorable, cherished grandchildren, Jessica, Harrison, and Hazel. He is also remembered by his siblings: brothers Robert and Alan (Barbie), sister Pamela, and nephew Colby. Also, two sweet poodles, Bella and Ginger.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Cleveland Clinic Akron General for their compassionate care over the years, especially the 5400-care team, and to the Cleveland Clinic Hospice team for their comfort during Gil's final days.
In accordance with Gil's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM EST at the Hummel Funeral Home, 3475 Copley Rd, Copley, OH 44321.
May his memory bring comfort and inspiration to all who knew him, and may his light continue to shine in those who carry his love forward.
