Frederick Costanzo

November 21, 1930 — August 29, 2025

Frederick "Fred" Costanzo, 94, passed away, peacefully, on August 29th, 2025. He lived his entire life in the Akron area. He was born to Italian immigrant parents, the youngest of four boys, and grew up in North Akron. Although fluent in Italian at a young age, his father emphasized learning and speaking English in order to acclimate to the American way. He graduated from North High School in 1949, and attended Akron Barber College, where he graduated and embarked on a long and fulfilling career. For an amazing 70 years, he actively operated the Costanzo's West Park Barbershop in Fairlawn, for which he was well known and respected by his many faithful customers.

Fred met the love of his life, Dolores, while barbering briefly in the Tallmadge area. They married in 1953, and settled down in West Akron where he raised his two sons, Frederick and Joseph. He was a long-time member of St. Sebastian's Parish, where his sons attended grade school. He played trumpet in a local band, and like his brother, Tony, was a great fan of jazz. He also enjoyed Italian and Latin music. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and bowled in a local league for numerous years. He enjoyed fishing and large game hunting, and along with his brother, Sam, adorned their barbershop with many of their trophies. He moved to Uniontown in 1978, and became an active member of Queen of Heaven Church. For many years, he enjoyed the good life with his wife, taking cruises and traveling to Hawaii to visit his brother, Biagio.

Fred was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his father, Rosario, mother, Teresa, wife, Dolores, brothers Santo, Biagio and Tony, and son Joseph. He is survived by his son, Fred (Andrea), three loving grandchildren (Nick, Sam and Gina), six great-grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews, godchildren and cherished family network. He will be greatly missed.

Fred loved his country very much. One regret that he had in life was that he never had a chance to serve his country. His three brothers were Army veterans, and he at one time had aspirations of joining the Marines Corps. He always admired and respected their dress uniforms. However, his passion for barbering took precedence and the rest is history.

Celebratory Mass of a Life well lived will be held November 21st at 11 am at Queen of Heaven Church, 1800 Steese Road, Uniontown, following a brief visitation from 10-11. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. The Family wishes to thank the staff at St. Edward's Green, the nursing facility at St. Edward's Fairlawn, and the folks at Traditions Hospice who provided loving care to Fred, and suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Village of St. Edward's Foundation, 3131 Smith Rd., Akron OH 44333 to benefit the Green and Fairlawn communities.
