Evelyn L. McCusker

Evelyn L. McCusker, age 95, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026. She was born on November 1, 1930 on a farm in Cullman, Alabama to John and Cecilia Leuenberger. Evelyn's life was filled with many many interests and accomplishments too numerous to count. She lived her life with great passion and care, from her work with the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW), to researching and documenting her family genealogy, to writing poetry, then later in life, puttering about with her husband Tom in their potters garden.
Evelyn's family moved north to Barberton, Ohio when she was fifteen, but the farm life of Alabama never left her blood. She loved every animal that came her way from tiny injured birds that her kids brought home, to the big milking cows in Amish country where she visited frequently. She loved the small joys, like the tiny spider that lived on her windowsill, the Easter egg that had "Granny" written on it with crayon, a perfectly ripe peach, her husband's kiss, a child's smile, visits from the therapy dogs at St. Ed's where she lived for the last 13 years of her life.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas J. McCusker; her parents, John and Cecilia Leuenberger; sisters, Edna Mae McCort, Maryann Storad; brother John Leuenberger; granddaughter Mariel Rose McCusker; son-in-law Hayes Spangler and daughter-in-law, Kellie McCusker. She leaves behind her sister, Patricia Hicks; son, John McCusker; daughters Vivian (Andy) Saxe, Marcia McCusker, Maureen (Pete) Menosky, Sheila Spangler and Karen (Jeff) Spangler; twelve grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren who called her Granny; and her many friends from St. Ed's staff and residents alike.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00am Monday, June 22, 2026 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Ave. Akron, where calling hours will be one hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Sebastian Parish or The Village of St. Edward Foundation.
