Eddie died peacefully Wednesday November 26, 2025 at St Lukes-Portage Lakes under hospice care.
He was the son of the late Irene (Labbe) and Dr Edward F Hellwig of Akron.
He is survived by daughter Katrina (Rick) LoCoco of Sanford, FL. Sisters Barbara (late Gene) Frank and Louise of Canal Fulton; Lyn (AJ) Willequer of Eustis, FL. Brothers Ray (Jenny) of Brimfield, OH; Marty of Winter Park, FL. Niece Abigail (Alek) Monger of Ravenna.
Eddie attended St Sebastian's grade school, Borromeo and St Vincent high schools and Wheeling University.
Eddie worked at Mactac Adhesives, Honeywell, and was an HVAC engineer at Trane.
He has lived in Akron; Minnesota; Wisconsin; and Illinois. He moved back to Akron in 2014.
Eddie loved fishing, piloting, shooting guns and tinkering with any project he could. But his favorite activity was anything with Katrina including listening to golden oldies and repeatedly watching the same science fiction, action, or comedy horror films. While at St Luke's he was able to go out on two boat rides, enjoy the 4th of July fireworks over Turkeyfoot Lake, and most importantly go fishing with Katrina for the first time in many, many years! He didn't catch anything but what a great, great day! He was already looking forward to next spring and getting out and fishing again.
After years of declining health and chronic pain, Eddie is now able to walk along the water pain free.
The family is very grateful for the many years of support that Louise gave to Eddie as his caregiver.
We also want to send special thanks to St Luke's-Portage Lakes, Summa Hospice (especially June), Summa City Hospital Doctors and Nurses, and Summa Barberton Family Practice.
Funeral services will be held at St Francis De Sales Church, 4019 Manchester Rd, Akron 44319, on Friday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. Fr Jeremy Merzweiler officiating. Private burial at Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
