David Michael Weis

February 16, 1937 — March 10, 2026

AKRON - David M. Weis, Ph.D., ABPP, 89, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on March 10, 2026, embraced by his loving family. Born February 16, 1937, in Taopi, Minnesota, to the late Raymond and Elizabeth (Kasel) Weis, David graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1955. He earned his B.A. from Loras College (1959) and an M.Ed. in Counseling Education from Ohio University (1960). He began his career as a guidance counselor in Gallipolis, later serving as the guidance director at Bexley High School. He pursued his doctoral studies at The Ohio State University, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1967. Later that year, David began a distinguished 31-year tenure at The University of Akron, where he was a professor in the Counseling and Special Education Department. Known to colleagues as "Doc", he established the Counseling Psychology Program for the university. In 1983, The American Board of Professional Psychologists certified David as a Diplomate of Counseling Psychology, and in 1984, he was awarded the rank of Adjunct Professor by Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Following his retirement in 1998, he continued his impact as a consulting psychologist for Shelter Care Safe Landing, Interval Brotherhood Home, and Siemens AG, in addition to his private practice. He was honored with the Dr. Bob Smith Trailblazer Award from the Summit County ADM Board for his tireless dedication to those in addiction recovery.

David centered his life around faith, family, and friends. He was a member of St. Sebastian Parish where he served as a Eucharistic minister, coach of CYO sports, and a member of the choir. David created strong family traditions with beach vacations to Kiawah Island, South Carolina and annual fishing trip reunions to Bena, Minnesota. David, lovingly known as "Grampy" by his four cherished grandchildren, was a very dedicated grandfather, teaching them how to ride bicycles, swim, fish, drive, and live faith-filled, honorable lives. He was a hero to his grandchildren, helping them to create lifelong memories that will be cherished. He also provided an abundance of guidance and counseling to his grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and siblings. David enjoyed an active lifestyle with family and friends as an avid golfer, gardener, fisherman, and Zips fan.

David was a steadfast, loving, kind, selfless husband, father, and grandfather who truly exemplified his well-known motto to "Celebrate Life". He is survived by his wife Lois DeVoe Weis of 62 years, his daughters Elizabeth Resweber (Chris) and Allyson Weis (Adam). He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Meghan and Corey Resweber and Maria and Jamie Ortiz, as well as his loving siblings Elaine Leif (Gene) and Cindy Enfield (Mike), and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth and Ray, and siblings Ray Weis (Mary), Anita Schriever (Les), Jack Weis (Gloria), and Dwayne Weis.

A funeral celebration will be held at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Avenue, Akron, Ohio, on Saturday, March 21, 2026, with visitation at 10:00 am and Mass at 11:00 am.
