Born July 17, 1918, the only surviving child of seven children of Frank and Marian Redle, of Sheridan, Wyoming, David Dillon Redle passed away peacefully January 7, 2015. After graduating from Creighton University in chemistry, he entered the U.S. Army in September of 1941, serving in World War II with distinction as commander of Company B in the 756th Tank Battalion, attaining the rank of captain. He earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and five battle stars during campaigns in North Africa, Italy- most notably the battle of Monte Casino, the invasion of Southern France, and Germany, with his last wartime duty in Nurnberg, Germany. He was recently knighted into the Order of Saint George, a military honorary society for calvary, tankers, and artillery. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Cunningham in 1945. After post graduate work in chemistry at the University of Minnesota, he and Betty settled in the Akron area in 1946. He retired from PPG Industries in 1983, serving in plant management, labor relations, and last as Director of Safety. He was predeceased by wife, Betty (2011), daughter, Jean, granddaughter, Mary Therese Redle, grandson, Mark Wendt, and is survived by children David (Mary) of Akron, Bernard of Marlboro, Ohio, Mary (Richard Stockton) of Canton, Ohio, Teresa (David Brostowitz) of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, Christine (Stephen Wendt) of Cincinnati, Ruth (Robert McGough) of Wadsworth, Stephen (Kathleen) of Cuyahoga Falls, and Joseph (Nicole) of Fairlawn, 28 grand children, and 5 great grandchildren. Grandpa always had his tool drawer full of candy, his freezer full of popsicles, and his heart full of love for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His life was strongly rooted in the Catholic faith, a faith he readily attributed to his surviving the war and blessing him throughout his life. He was a member of St. Paul Parish until 1966 and currently of St. Sebastian Parish. Calling hours will be Friday, 4-8 p.m. at the Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange St. Akron, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Ave. Akron, Ohio.
