David K. Barnes passed away May 26 2010 surrounded by his family and close friends after a brief battle against pancreatic cancer. Born November 10 1954 Dave is survived by his wife of twenty years Mary (nee Cornacchione) and daughters Lauren Taylor and Lynn Marie. In addition he is survived by his parents Bill and Jo Anne brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Pookie nieces Nikki and Brittany Barnes sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kathy and Dave Ott nephews Nathan Benjamin Jonathan and Daniel Ott and childhood friend Terry O'Rourke who stayed by his side throughout his entire illness. A lifelong resident of Akron Dave graduated from Buchtel High School in 1973. He excelled in basketball golf and ran cross country because he was from the era where playing multiple sports was encouraged. Dave was a popular and charismatic kind of guy as evidenced by being crowned 'King B' his senior year at Buchtel. Dave stayed in close touch with many classmates and helped organize numerous reunions. Golf and Dave were synonymous. Playing golf by the age of ten he played his first tournament at Good Park Golf Course in 1966 in the Twelve and Under Division of the Boys Junior Tournament. A graduate of The University of Akron Dave played basketball for two years and was a four year varsity member of the golf team which earned NCAA National Tournament berths each year. He stands alone as the only First Team All-American in golf from the University. As confirmation of his contributions to athletics Dave was inducted into The University of Akron Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He and Terry started the Summit county Amateur in 1975 and he was vice president of the Akron District Golf Association from 1990-2007. Dave worked for Portage Broom and Brush before being hired by the City of Akron to work at Good Park Golf Course as assistant manager. In 2003 Dave was entrusted to open and run Mud Run Golf Course. His long-held goal was realized on October 1 2009 when he was named manager of Good Park. The Masters Tournament was his favorite golf event and he hosted annual gatherings for the final round. Through the generosity and connections of dear friends Dave attended a day's round of the Masters in April 2010 with Terry a dream come true. As golf is not possible in Akron in the winter Dave moved to basketball playing in numerous leagues in Akron beginning with the under 30 leagues and progressing to the over whatever leagues. Not only was Dave a player he was a coach. Dave coached his daughters' CYO leagues and continued coaching CYO through this past season for the love of the game. Special thanks to Sally Olszewski Jane Ragozine Dr. Payne the hospice nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Summa for their assistance and compassion.
