David Phillips Hazelwood, also known as Bill Jones, founder of Bill Jones Leather shops in Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, and Athens, OH, recently passed away at the age of 98. After a career in advertising and public relations, in 1967 he opened his first leather shop on Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights. He moved to Peninsula, Ohio in 1973, where he continued his leather work, selling though galleries in NE Ohio.
His family became the numerous stray dogs and cats that showed up at his home, Hazelwood was born in Lakewood, OH, and graduated from the Kiski School in Saltsburg, PA. After serving in the US Navy, he graduated from Hiram College, and Western Reserve University. David did promotional work for Musicarnival, the Hiram College Showboat, the Hanna Theater, and the Cleveland Playhouse. While in college, he played jazz saxophone, and he tried his hand at midget auto racing.
David Hazelwood was preceded in death by his mother, Laura Hazelwood, and his sister, Janet Stevens. He is survived by a niece, Betsy (Mike) Macholchic, a nephew, Tom (Diane) Stevens, great nieces and nephews; and good friends Debra and Stephen Bures.
A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, July 7, at 10 am, at the Peninsula United Methodist Church, 1575 Main Street, Peninsula, 44264. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peninsula Library, the Humane Society of Summit County, or the charity of your choice.
