Charles Robert Hirt, recently of Akron, OH, born May 17, 1937, passed away on December 24, 2025. He was a kind-hearted man, a loving father, and a lifelong lover of animals, music, nature, and good food. A man with much curiosity , he was also a collector of many things, finding joy in the stories objects could tell. His life was marked by friendships, service to his country, and care for those around him.
After graduating from Fairmont Senior High in Fairmont, WV, Charlie began his higher education at West Virginia University before joining the United States Naval Air Force. He completed pilot training in Pensacola, Florida, and became a pilot and Flight Commander. His squadron patrolled U.S. and allied coastal waters during the Cold War.
During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Charlie played a key role in one of the most critical moments of the Cold War. U.S. aircraft were tasked with photographing Soviet missiles being removed from Cuba, and Charlie was one of the pilots who carried out these high-stakes surveillance missions. For his service, he received a Letter of Commendation signed by President John F. Kennedy.
Charlie returned to Pensacola as a flight instructor, completing his naval service. He later returned to West Virginia University, earning a degree in Business and Commerce. He carried the discipline and leadership he learned in the Navy into every chapter of his civilian life.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Charlie loved music, nature, and good food. These passions reflected his gentle spirit and deep appreciation for the world around him.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Esther Hirt, his sisters, Marian Elizabeth (Hirt) Davis, and Barbara Margaret (Hirt) Nickel, his son, Charles Egill Hirt. He is survived by his brother Rick Hirt of Akron, OH, three children, and eight grandchildren, who will remember him for his warmth, many interests, and the loving influence he brought to their lives.
His service, kindness, and legacy will not be forgotten.
A viewing and a brief, small funeral will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2:00 pm, at Hummel Funeral Home, 2800 West Market St., Fairlawn, OH.
