Alma Hose

February 12, 1921 — September 7, 2023

Alma J. Baird Hose,102 years 7 months, passed away on September 7th 2023. She was born on February 12th 1921, in Akron, Ohio to Lewis J. Baird and Alice A. Meredith Baird. On New Years Eve 1945-1946, she met Glenn Arthur Hose, who had recently returned from the War. They were married in 1948 and had 43 happy years together before he passed in 1991. Also proceeding her were brother David L. Baird and cousin Alberteen Lowdermilk, who was her life long best friend.

Alma was a graduate of Copley High School at age 16, and her passion for education led her to pursue a teaching degree with which she graduated from Kent State University at age 18. She later received her Masters Degree in Library Science from The Ohio State University. During the Great Depression, Alma lost her father and she began teaching to help support her mother and brother. During WWII, she worked in a factory to support the War effort when on summer break from school. She first taught at Loyal Oak School in Norton, then soon moved to Akron Public Schools where she became an LRC Elementary Curriculum Specialist until her retirement in 1976. She was a Jennings Scholar and a lifetime member of Delta Kappa Gamma International. Alma was a member of Copley United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School.

Alma was a talented pianist and artist, an avid reader, loved flowers and birds, and had a green thumb. She was interested in Genealogy, tracing several generations of our ancestors. She loved all needle arts, especially quilting, and hand stitched and embroidered Peter Rabbit crib quilts for each of her 6 grandchildren to cherish. She also hand-pieced bed quilts for children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. According to her granddaughter Betsy, "Grandma could do everything but fly."

While notable, this small summary of her life and character barely touches the depth of the woman she was and the life she lived.

Alma is survived by two daughters and a son. Claire Mendez (George Moore) of Portland, Oregon; Susan (Mark) Koenig of Hinckley, with whom she lived for 32 years; and Russell (Kathy) Hose of Copley.

Grandchildren, Andrew Koenig, Rachel (Joe) Cooper, Kara (Dan) Putnam, Ashley (Bill) Lonjak, Elizabeth (Andy) Koenig Smith and Samantha Hose. She was blessed to have known 8 great grandchildren. Alma also leaves a dear niece and nephew, Carole and Wayne Hose, and special friends, Sue and Erica.

There will be no calling hours. As she wished, a private memorial service and life celebration will be held at the convenience of her family.
